Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes will be out of action for the next 12 days.
Bruno Guimaraes has been ruled out of Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Argentina on Wednesday.
Fresh from captaining Newcastle United to their first domestic trophy in 70 years on Sunday with a 2-1 win over Liverpool, the midfielder started Brazil’s 2-1 victory against Colombia in the early hours of UK time.
Barcelona winger Raphinha handed Brazil the lead just six minutes but at half-time the scoreline was level after Liverpool forward Luis Diaz equalised. It looked to be staying that way until the 99th minute when Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior netted.
Dorival Junior’s side next travel to Argentina but Guimaraes, after his yellow card in the 16th minute, won’t be available due to suspension.
Reacting on Instagram, Guimaraes wrote: “A very important victory. With determination, determination and sweat, in the Brazilian style. Thank you Brasilia for the support. It certainly made a difference for us. We continue to strive for more.
“Sad to be out of the next game, but I am sure that I will be another fan of our team 🇧🇷🙏🏽”
A rare break for Bruno Guimaraes
Guimaraes will be out of action until Newcastle’s Premier League clash against Brentford at St James’ Park on Wednesday, April 2. Essentially having a 12-day break is a rarity for the 27-year-old, who has missed just two matches for club and country in the last two seasons.
The amount of football Guimaraes has played recently led to suggestions he was fatigued and needed a break but Eddie Howe said: “It’s difficult because I’m sure if you asked Bruno, he would say he doesn’t need a rest.

“It is up to us to look at his schedule and try and find ways to do that. We have tried, but he’s such an important player wise have turned to him more often than we would ideally want to because of his strengths and qualities.
“So, for example, in the FA Cup, we gave him 45 minutes in the last round and share that burden with Sandro [Tonali]. His schedule is intense. As soon as we have played the Carabao Cup final, he will be off to play for his national team and that will be when others are getting that rest and recuperation.
“He won’t get that but that’s part of being a top player, the benefits of being a top player that he is. But it comes at a cost at times and we have to make sure we protect him.
“He’s in the middle of everything really, he is behind a lot of our good play still. He is an outstanding player and will continue to be. We just need to help him in those moments where we can keep him fresh and get him to his best levels.”
