Rasmus Hojlund sends 14-word message after scoring for Denmark, explains Cristiano Ronaldo inspired celebration

Rasmus Hojlund’s past seven days have been the best he has experienced in a long time, with two goals for club and country.

After a goal drought stretching all the way back to mid-December, the past week will have been a nice change.

Last Sunday, Rasmus Hojlund broke his 22-game goalless streak for Manchester United, which elicited a strong celebration as expected.

Hojlund scored against Leicester, which followed an improved outing against Real Sociedad. He could have hoped to carry this form into the international break and he did exactly this.

Denmark were facing Portugal this week, with Diogo Dalot commenting on his hopes Hojlund wouldn’t score, but he did exactly that.

Hojlund scored the winner for Denmark and celebrated like Cristiano Ronaldo right in front of his idol, which he defended as not being done to mock the United legend.

Rasmus Hojlund sends message on Instagram after scoring against Portugal

Hojlund had to defend his Ronaldo-inspired celebration, as for some it could come across as mocking.

Now, Hojlund has taken to Instagram with a message in response to Thursday night’s game.

“The 7-year-old fan in me might’ve gotten the overhand after I scored.”

Hojlund may have had good intentions with his celebration, but one thing known about Ronaldo is that he doesn’t exactly take well to being mocked even if unintentional.

However, from Hojlund’s words earlier this week, it is clear he meant it as a sign of respect.

Rasmus Hojlund idolised Cristiano Ronaldo

Hojlund would have been six when Manchester United last lifted the Champions League trophy which starred a world-class Ronaldo as the star of the team.

So being a United fan, he was always going to idolise the Portuguese record goalscorer.

Speaking prior to the match, Hojlund admitted that Ronaldo was his footballing icon.

“Now I’m not going to exaggerate, but Cristiano is everything to me,” said Hojlund about the Portugal star.

“I fell in love with football because of Cristiano, I became a Manchester United fan because of Cristiano, I started self-training because of Cristiano, I started doing push-ups and sit-ups every day before I went to bed, because of Cristiano, because I wanted to be Cristiano,” he added.
