Madam/Mr. (Vice-) President,
The European Union thanks the Special Rapporteur for his report and reiterates our strong support for the mandate.
We welcomed the topic of last years’ Forum on Minority Issues, as the representation and self-representation of minorities in public spaces not only plays an important role in their visibility in society, but also provides opportunities for the expression of their identity in private and in public spaces – be it through the use of their own language, the right to freedom of religion or belief, or the use of traditional practices, art and other cultural manifestations, and at the same time remaining active part of the society they live in.
These elements contribute to the strengthening of the identity-building of persons belonging to minorities within the broader fabric of society and not as closed social groups. In this context, we also share your assessment that a person belonging to a minority should be able to access information and knowledge about the history, customs, practices and contribution to society as a whole by the minority they belong to.
The EU fully aligns with the premise that respecting, protecting and fulfilling the human rights of all persons belonging to national or ethnic, religious, and linguistic minorities contributes to political and social stability and is key for effective prevention of conflicts.
Mr. Special Rapporteur,
What are the most widely applicable best practice examples you came across in your research for this report?
Thank you.
