The former Manchester United star was 'laser focused' when he gave Scotland a 1-0 lead over Greece

UEFA has been urged to take immediate action following a controversial incident involving former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay during Scotland's UEFA Nations League match.

The first leg of the play-off tie, away to Greece on Thursday (March 21), got underway in what was an exciting game of football. Fans of the Tartan Army were delighted to leave Piraeus with a 1-0 win.

However, the match was not without its controversy as fans rushed to social media to raise a contentious issue with the football governing body. Something they branded "disgraceful", "out of order" and "embarrassing."

Scotland were given an opportunity to break the deadlock late in the first half after Greek defender Lazaros Rota fouled McTominay in the box. The midfielder, who left United for Napoli last year, stepped forward to take the spot kick and calmly found the back of the net to give the Scots the lead.

Viewers were quick to notice the home fans had tried to put off the 28-year-old before he took the penalty by shining bright lasers in his eyes. Luckily it did not put off the player, but people were not happy with the behaviour.

"Was it just me or did anyone else see the green laser lights on McTominay's body and face before he took the penalty?" one fan posted on X. "Disgraceful if it was the case, UEFA need to intervene."

Another added: "Scott McTominay was the epitome of cool in slotting away that penalty with a laser shining full on in his face. Dirty tricks from the Greece fans." While BBC pundit Steven Naismith commented: "The laser pens are brought out frequently there too so Scotty was probably used to it."

Scotland welcome Greece to Hampden Park for the second leg of the UEFA Nations League play-offs on Sunday, March 23.
