Arsenal have experienced plenty of difficulties when it comes to their squad this season, as injuries have plagued Mikel Arteta’s options. The problem has been particularly bad in the forward line, where Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka, Ethan Nwaneri, and Martin Odegaard have all suffered with problems over the course of the campaign.
Even now, Havertz, Jesus and Saka remain out, with the former pair absent for at least the rest of the season, perhaps longer, while the Gunners' talisman Saka is hoping to return soon after around four months on the sidelines. Arteta has looked to unorthodox options in order to cope with the issues.
The January transfer window was a missed opportunity and in the wake of Havertz’s hamstring issue, Mikel Merino grabbed his chance at centre-forward – scoring twice against Leicester and has since extended his record to four goals in seven matches. His form earned him a call-up to the Spain national side where his exploits have continued.
The midfielder-turned-forward option came off the bench in the 84th minute with La Roja 2-1 down away at the Netherlands. He scored in the third minute of stoppage time to earn an equaliser, tapping in after a rebounded effort.
More of interest, perhaps to some Arsenal fans, was the player with the original effort which helped to force the goal: Nico Williams. The Athletic Club wide man has been linked with a move to the club in the summer.
With the futures of both Martinelli and Leandro Trossard not assured, there is a chance one could be replaced or even if not, the Basque winger signed to add further quality to the forward line. Arteta is a known fan of the 22-year-old and after yet another big moment for his country, this could only further that desire.
Seeing him set up an Arsenal player is sure to grab even more attention. Merino did well to think quickly and stab in the rebound after good work from Williams, beating his man before cutting inside to strike.
A trademark movement from Williams, and one that Arsenal fans could surely expect to see if he did end up making the switch to north London. With a release clause of more than £50million, it would, however, not come cheaply.
