Everton have seen plenty of change at Goodison Park over recent seasons due to a difficult period in the Merseyside club’s history.

Farhad Moshiri’s ownership of Everton represented a chaotic period in Merseyside both on and off the pitch, a struggle for all involved.

Warrington opens up on Everton exit

After working his way up through the Everton youth set-up, Warrington was given his Toffees debut in a League Cup game under the management of Frank Lampard.

The youngster was given a series of loan spells, working his way up the leagues, joining Plymouth in the Championship for the 2023-24 season.

Although an injury cut his loan short, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise and upon his Everton return, he was given his Premier League debut by Sean Dyche.

Season Team Appearances

2024-25 Salford City (loan) 10

2024-25 Leyton Orient 8

2023-24 Plymouth (loan) 2

2023-24 Everton 1

Lewis Warrington has continued to struggle for minutes.

This turned out to be his only senior league appearance though after Warrington was given a big decision to make in the summer.

Despite being offered the opportunity to extend his stay with the Blues where he could be a squad player and have the potential to work his way into the team, Warrington admitted it was his decision to call time on his stay.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo (21 March), the 22-year-old said: “I did want to leave in the summer, but it was tough because I’d been here my whole life. It was a bit emotional, saying bye to everyone.

“But I felt like it was a step I needed to take. I just felt like a fresh challenge, because it was alright being at Everton and training with them every day, but I always knew I wasn’t going to become a Premier League player because they’ve got lads there who’ve played 400 Premier League games.

“I needed to get out of my comfort zone a little bit because Everton was very much like a comfort zone for me.”

Everton looking ahead to an exciting future

Warrington deserves credit for the difficult decision he made as the opportunity to stay in the top-flight was surely a tempting one so being able to walk away so he can maximise his own opportunities is fair enough.

The 22-year-old is now on loan at Salford City in League Two from Leyton Orient which suggests that he was fairly accurate with where he thought his standards were.

The tough times are over at Goodison Park with TFG now the owners of the Blues and David Moyes having turned the club around.

With that in mind, as the Toffees make the move to Bramley-Moore Dock in the summer, they will be looking ahead to an exciting transfer window as the team will no doubt start to be transformed in the hope of pushing up the table.

In that case, it’s unlikely that Warrington would have found himself anywhere near the first team in the Premier League.

As Everton look to move forward under new leaders now though, younger players will surely see their talents and progress looked after moving forward too.
