Dean Smith has been rewarded for his record-setting work at MLS outfit Charlotte with a new contract.

The former Aston Villa and Leicester City boss has signed a new deal until the 2027 Major League Soccer season, having made a big impression in North Carolina.

The 54-year-old, who guided Villa back into the Premier League, moved to Charlotte in December 2023, six months after he had failed to keep the Foxes in the top flight.

However, he has had far more success and in his first season he led them to to their highest ever points total (51) and first-ever playoff win. They also had the league’s second-best defensive record as goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina was named Goalkeeper of the Year. This season they are off to their best ever start and are unbeaten at home so far.

All of which has led owner David Tepper to praise the former centre-back. “Dean has been an exceptional leader for Charlotte FC and we are excited for him to sign a new contract,” he said.

“The club’s success over the past year is a reflection of his dedication and commitment to excellence both on and off the pitch. We look forward to what the future holds with Dean leading the way.”

Smith welcomed the new deal: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being the head coach of Charlotte FC and I’m honoured to sign a new contract with the club,” Smith told the club website. “Everyone at the club is aligned in our vision to be a leader in Major League Soccer.

“To our supporters, you have made our family feel welcome in this city and for that we’re grateful to each one of you. We will work together with the aim of consistently challenging for major trophies every season.”
