The women’s football world turned its eyes to Pride Park last weekend to see Chelsea banish their demons and end a run of three consecutive League Cup final defeats, picking up the first available piece of silverware of the season.

Away from Derby though there was one result that occurred which flew under the radar but had huge ramifications on the title race, and that was Manchester United’s 3-1 home defeat to Liverpool.

Marc Skinner’s side were the closest to Chelsea in the top-flight, and by losing that game United have given Chelsea an eight-point lead with six games left to play, while also conceding their second-placed position to Arsenal on goal difference.

Given the WSL has not been decided by more than two points since 2018-19, the next six games are beginning to look more and more like a procession than a title race, with Sonia Bompastor remaining undefeated in the top-flight since taking the reins from Emma Hayes last summer, winning 14 of her 16 games in the dugout (drawing the other two).

The Blues visit the Etihad this Sunday and will be looking to bounce back from their midweek defeat there in the Champions League, where the brilliance of Vivianne Miedema reduced them to a two-goal deficit in the first leg of their quarter-final clash.

Here, Mail Sport takes a look at where and when Millie Bright can finally do the high-flying Blues the honours and lift that illustrious piece of silverware…

Chelsea could secure their sixth consecutive WSL title with four games left of the season to play

Sonia Bompastor's are currently eight points clear at the top of the Women's Super League table

Their significant lead comes after rivals Manchester United suffered a 3-1 defeat at Liverpool last week

If Chelsea beat City and the others win

If Chelsea beat Man City and then also win their following games against West Ham and Crystal Palace, then they need just a point against Manchester United on April 27 to win the WSL at Leigh Sports Village with two games to spare.

That’s working on the basis that they maintain their eight-point lead with both Arsenal and Manchester United winning their next games.

Given that Manchester United will be likely to win their next three – against relegation strugglers Aston Villa, 8th-placed Everton and 9th-placed West Ham – means that this is the most likely option if Bompastor’s side manage to triumph at the Etihad this weekend.

Arsenal have a sterner test in Liverpool next but they then face Crystal Palace and Aston Villa after, and it’s still realistic that Renee Slegers’ side will be able to win all three of these as well.

If Chelsea beat City and the others drop points

The most likely scenario is if Arsenal and United drop points in either of their next two fixtures and Chelsea win their next three games then Bompastor’s team could win the league at Kingsmeadow against Crystal Palace on April 20 with just a draw. This is on the basis that they would have at least a 10-point lead with three games to go.

The earliest possible time Chelsea could win their sixth consecutive title would be at Kingsmeadow against West Ham on March 30, their game immediately after City, with four games left of the season yet to play.

However, the most realistic scenario remains the league triumph after a potential win over the Red Devils at Leigh Sports Village

Meanwhile, Renee Slegers' Arsenal sit in second place with 36 points after 16 games in the WSL

This would only work if they beat both City and West Ham, and Arsenal and United also lost both of their next two games. While it’s mathematically possible that they could take a 14-point lead with only 12 available points remaining, it’s incredibly unrealistic!

If Chelsea drop points at City

This is where things get a bit more complicated. Without getting too far into the nitty gritty though, if Chelsea drop points at City but still win their subsequent games then the earliest they can win the league will be at Leigh Sports Village against Manchester United – and only if Arsenal and United drop enough points between now and then.
