Sandro Tonali has Italian media raving after Newcastle star shines - 'your favourite midfielder'

Sandro Tonali impressed on international duty with Italy.

Newcastle United have had very little time to take in their Carabao Cup Final triumph from the weekend with the first-team squad jetting off to Dubai while others joined up with their respective countries for the international break.

Eddie Howe's side will get back together for a planned celebration on Saturday, March 29th to commemorate their trophy win, but until then, it's business as usual for the Magpies' players.

Sandro Tonali was among Newcastle United's international contingent and he showed no sign of a Carabao Cup hangover, picking up where he left off with an impressive display against Germany in the Nations League.

The Magpies' midfielder scored the opening goal in their 2-1 defeat to Germany in the first leg.

Tonali capitalised on a poor clearance from Jonathan Tah to give the Azzuri the lead at the San Siro, but it was the visitors who came from behind to hold an advantage going into the second leg thanks to goals from Tim Kleindienst and Leon Goretzka.

Italian media outlet SportMediaSet gave Tonali a 7/10 rating which was the highest of any Italian player on the night and said: “[Tonali] towers in midfield showing physical condition, technique and overflowing personality.

"In the first half he unlocks the game with a precise right-footed shot, then tests Baumann’s reflexes with a right-footed shot from the edge. In the second half he serves a back-heel assist to Kean worthy of applause.”

Corriere dello Sport called the Newcastle man “unstoppable” and also gave him a respectable rating from the game.

They awarded Tonali a 7.5 rating, and said: “Everything you would like from your favourite midfielder: he gets into the space as Spalletti likes (remember Perrotta?), he is in the right place twice (and scores on the first occasion), unstoppable.”

Newcastle star Joelinton in action for Brazil during the international break.

Fellow Magpies' midfielders Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton were also in action yesterday. The two Brazilians both picked up yellow cards in the 2-1 win over Colombia, with Guimaraes starting the game.

His Newcastle teammate came off the bench in the 28th minute to replace Gerson and helped see the win over the line, with Guimaraes replaced in the 78th minute.

Martin Dubravka was also in action for Slovakia on Thursday afternoon, helping his side keen a clean sheet in their Nations League clash with Slovenia.
