What Andre Onana was spotted doing during Cameroon’s World Cup qualifier would never fly under Ruben Amorim at Man Utd

Andre Onana caught the eye of Manchester United fans during one unusual moment during Cameroon’s World Cup qualifying match against Eswatini on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Manchester United No 1 had a strong start to the 2024-25 Premier League campaign before his form took a nosedive in recent months.

Andre Onana has been met with criticism again over his lack of consistency at times, despite keeping his place as United’s No 1 under manager Ruben Amorim.

The ex-Ajax and Inter Milan star, who was signed by the Red Devils in 2023, is one of the many United players away from Old Trafford during the March break.

Onana was called up to the Cameroon squad by manager Marc Brys for his country’s two World Cup qualifying matches during the international break.

Man Utd star Andre Onana makes his presence felt in Eswatini and Cameroon’s World Cup qualifier

Cameroon were in action for their World Cup qualifying campaign and Marc Brys’ men secured a 0-0 draw against Eswatini at the Mbombela Stadium in South Africa.

Brys’ side are currently second in Group D after five matches played and Cameroon are one point behind leaders Cabo Verde in the World Cup qualifying table.

Cameroon have picked up two wins and three draws in World Cup qualifiers ahead of their match with Libya at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium on Tuesday.

During the Eswatini match, Andre Onana was bizarrely spotted in the opposition half during a direct free-kick opportunity for Cameroon in Wednesday’s clash.

Footage posted on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, showed the Manchester United shot-stopper appearing to bark instructions at his teammates.

United fans, unsurprisingly, were left deeply confused by what Cameroon No 1 Onana was doing hovering over the free-kick set-piece against Eswatini.

Ruben Amorim’s current feelings on Cameroon star Andre Onana are clear amid chequered Man Utd season

United manager Ruben Amorim sent a clear-cut message earlier this month that both he and the Red Devils players need to “support” Onana going forward.

“I think he passed this [stage] in the last year,” he said ahead of United’s FA Cup defeat to Fulham.

“I don’t know for sure. There was some difficult moments. But this season he did some great saves that save our team and then sometimes has some problems.

“But that is normal and I think if you look through our team you can find a lot of players with that issue, so I think we are not performing so well as a team and sometimes some players have problems.

“People talk a lot about the second goal from Ipswich. He is waiting for the touch of [Liam] Delap.

“I think that is really clear, and then the ball continues to the goal, so that can happen.

“We just have to support Andre, like we support all the players, and prepare the next game. Forget about the past and prepare the future.”

Onana has the support of Amorim as the United No 1, but the former Sporting CP boss won’t want to see him hovering over a Red Devils free-kick in the future.
