Microsoft has released Windows 11 Build 27818 to testers in the Canary channel; this update improves the speed of extracting files from ZIP archives, especially those containing thousands of small files, with speed increases of about 5-10%.
This is only possible when you use Windows 11's built-in unzipping functionality—not with any third-party app like WinRAR, 7-Zip, or others.
Microsoft has been working on File Explorer's performance for some time, with previous updates focusing on zipping (compressing) files. This latest change specifically addresses unzipping (extracting) files, as reported by Windows Report.
Although the improvement may not be dramatic for all scenarios, it definitely addresses long-standing complaints about slow performance when handling compressed archives in Windows, especially when there are many small files included.
As this is currently a preview build, the improved unzipping performance will likely be made available to all Windows 11 users in a future update.
