Former Cavs assistant hired as head coach at D1 program

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Former [Cleveland Cavaliers](https://www.cleveland.com/cavs/) assistant coach Dan Geriot has been hired as the head coach of the Division I Iona Gaels men’s basketball program, the school announced Thursday.

Geriot is currently in his first season as an assistant coach for the New Orleans Pelicans. He spent the previous nine NBA seasons in a range of coaching roles with the Cavs, including the team’s championship season in 2015-16.

He takes over an Iona program that finished this past season 17-17 and lost in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship game under head coach Tobin Anderson, who was fired Monday after finishing 33-34 in two seasons.

“I am grateful for this opportunity and excited to get to work,” Geriot said in a [news release](https://ionagaels.com/news/2025/3/20/iona-university-names-dan-geriot-as-head-coach-of-mens-basketball-program.aspx). “Iona has a strong basketball tradition and history of success, and I look forward to being part of it. Our goal is to build a team that plays hard, competes at the highest level, and makes our fans proud. I can’t wait to get started.”

Geriot, a 10-year NBA coaching veteran, began as the Cavs’ seasonal video coordinator from 2015-16. While with the Cavs, he also served as assistant video coordinator/coaching assistant (2016-18), assistant/player development coach (2018-19), assistant coach (2019-21), head coach of the G League’s Canton Charge (2021-22), and assistant coach and director of player development (2022-24).

Prior to the NBA, Geriot coached at the collegiate level as an assistant coach at Campbell University (2013-15) and Princeton University (2011-13). He also played at the University of Richmond from 2006-11, leading the Spiders to two NCAA Tournament appearances while averaging 10.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2 assists per game.

“Dan’s background in player development and coaching at a high level makes him a great fit for Iona,” said Iona Director of Athletics Matthew Glovaski. “He has a vision for the future of our program and an understanding of what it takes to compete at a high level. We are excited to have him on board and eager to see what he brings to our team.”
