Eddie Howe, manager of Newcastle United, celebrates with the trophy after winning the Carabao Cup Final
Road closures and travel plans for Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup trophy celebrations are still being finalised, city officials say.
The Magpies announced on Friday that they will be staging a huge free event on the Town Moor on Saturday, March 29, to mark the historic 2-1 Wembley victory over Liverpool. Fans have been told they must register an interest online if they want to attend the open air event, but that will not guarantee access and it is unclear how many supporters will be able to join the celebration.
There has been no mention by the club of any open top bus parade through the city that would give more fans a glimpse of their trophy-winning heroes with the club’s first piece of domestic silverware since 1955, while details of any road closures or other transport changes also remain unclear at this stage. Newcastle City Council told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that more information would be released to fans in the coming days.
A spokesperson said: “We are working closely with Newcastle United to finalise details for the eagerly anticipated Carabao Cup celebrations which will be a fantastic day in the city. Full details of road closures for this major event will be confirmed in the coming days. However, as with any big event in the city, people are advised to plan ahead and use public transport where possible and allow extra time for travel as we expect lots of people will want to be part of this exciting event.”
Supporters are being advised to use public transport to travel to the celebration if possible. Tyne and Wear Metro operator Nexus advised on Friday that its services would be busy, but was also unable to provide specific details of what will happen on the day – including any potential access restrictions at nearby stations such as Haymarket to account for the huge expected crowds.
A Nexus spokesperson added: “The Newcastle United cup winners’ event promises to be a really exciting day for the city. We’re looking forward to providing some of the essential public transport services for the many thousands of supporters who are expected to see the Newcastle team with the Carabao Cup.
“Metro and bus services are going to be busy on that Saturday, 29 March. All customers need to be ready for this and plan their journeys in advance, whatever their plans are on the day. Further information about travelling to and from the event using the Tyne and Wear Metro and the local bus network will be made available on our website, www.nexus.org.uk, in the coming days.”
Next Saturday’s celebrations on the Town Moor, to be set around a large stage adjacent to the Great North Road, will be fans’ first chance to see manager Eddie Howe and his cup-winning team with the trophy since Wembley.
NUFC announced on Friday: “It will feature a DJ, live band, 'Road to Wembley' highlights, a screening of the full cup final and special guests. The team will then proudly lift the Carabao Cup on stage - presenting the club's first domestic trophy for 70 years to the city. The celebrations will close with a spectacular show from club partner Sela and further event details will be published ahead of the show.”
