Manchester United are weighing up a fresh attempt to lure Borussia Dortmund star Felix Nmecha to Old Trafford. The Red Devils have been linked with a summer swoop for the German midfielder, but their interest in the 24-year-old is nothing new.

According to reports, United are aiming to take advantage of Dortmund’s poor season with an audacious move. It is suggested that the German side might be forced to sell some of their top stars should they fail to qualify for the Champions League, which looks likely with just a handful of league games remaining.

They are not keen on selling Nmecha, who is rated at £40million, but could be backed into a corner with United lurking. Amid their interest, the Premier League side have actually attempted to sign the 24-year-old in the past.

Back in 2023, it was suggested that his representatives had held talks with the Red Devils regarding a move. Nmecha, who was with Bundesliga rivals Wolfsburg at the time, was represented by his father following a change in management.

But a move never materialised with Nmecha eventually moving on to Dortmund for around £30m. The midfielder had made 50 appearances for Wolfsburg, while he has now accumulated 56 appearances for his current club.

Before that, Nmecha also represented Man United’s cross-city rivals Manchester City having graduated from the club’s academy alongside brother Lukas. He made just two first-team appearances before being released at the end of his contract.

"After 13 years of supporting and playing at this amazing club it’s time for the next step in my career," he said on social media after his initial departure from Manchester. “(I'm) leaving with so many memories and friends made, I want to say thank you to God first because without Him none of this would have been possible."

"I want to say thank you to every player I’ve played with, coach I’ve worked with and every person that has helped me on this journey. This club will always be a part of me and in my heart. I wish everyone all the best in the future in every area of their lives physically, spiritually and mentally."

Should United push on with a move for Nmecha, it would be the first stage of a huge midfield rebuild under new boss Amorim. Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen is expected to leave at the end of his deal and he has already hinted he will be on the lookout for a new club.

Casemiro is another star who could depart despite forcing his way back into the side under Amorim. He has constantly been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.
