"A young Michael Carrick" - Ex-Tottenham man in awe of Spurs ace who is an 'intelligent…

The 2024/25 season has been quite torrid for Tottenham Hotspur, with the club fighting in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Spurs were expected to compete for a UEFA Champions League slot and possibly a first trophy in 17 years. However, those hopes have been cut short by their awful showings.

Tottenham are winless in their last three league games. The international break offers only a little respite before they face a Chelsea side that always brings bad luck to Spurs (see the injuries Tottenham players suffered in their last two meetings with the West Londoners).

Amid all the doom and gloom of the season, there are a few bright spots to console Tottenham fans. One of those shining lights is midfielder Lucas Bergvall.

The 19-year-old Spurs star has impressed in his 38 appearances under Ange Postecoglou this term, registering a goal and four assists.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola hailed him as unstoppable earlier in the season, highlighting the youngster’s impact in England.

There was more praise for Bergvall from former Tottenham star and the first Swedish player to pull on a Spurs shirt, Erik Edman.

Edman said (via the Tottenham website): “I thought he might even need to go on loan for a period to adapt to the English game, but he has taken his opportunity. He is growing physically, and he loves the physical side of the game.

“Lucas reminds me a little of a young Michael Carrick, who I played with that season at Spurs in 2004/05. What a player, played off both feet, never lost the ball, and always evaded pressure. Lucas is an intelligent footballer.”

Bergvall will hope to continue making a name for himself in North London. He is one of the players Tottenham should be aiming to build around.

In our view, Bergvall would benefit from having a more composed and physical presence beside him in the Tottenham engine room to allow the Swedish star to spring forward.

A defensive midfielder must top the Spurs transfer wishlist this summer if they want to improve on their lacklustre displays this season and get the best of Bergvall.
