Before the Buffalo Bills can get into the meat of their offseason programs, there are a couple formalities that need to be finished ahead of training camp this summer. One of those is finalizing this season’s coaching staff. While the majority of the staff remains the same, there are a couple changes to discuss.
There was no change at the top of the coaching hierarchy for the Bills. Sean McDermott once again is returning as the team’s head coach, still searching to get Buffalo over the hump after reaching his second AFC Championship game with the Bills.
Leading the offense is Joe Brady as he enters his second full season as offensive coordinator with Josh Allen as his quarterback. The offense last year set franchise records and was one of the best in the league but there were times where it seemed to stall, which could be an area they focus on improving.
Also entering his second season as coordinator is Bobby Babich leading the defense. It was an up-and-down first season at the helm for Babich, but now it’s time to see what he can do. The defense didn’t play the best during the postseason, which needs to be an area of focus along with the run defense.
One of the big changes to the coaching staff is found in new special teams coordinator Chris Tabor. The last couple of seasons were observed to be a struggle on special teams. Buffalo was the first team to allow a kickoff return for a touchdown last season and that was in Week 1. One of the huge differences in their game against the Los Angeles Rams this past season was a blocked punt that went for a touchdown. We can go on and on, but the unit just wasn’t disciplined in key areas.
The other area of change is with the strength and condition staff. During his end-of-season press conference, general manager Brandon Beane made it a point to mention how he wanted the team to get stronger so perhaps these changes are putting pen to paper. Will Greenber was named head strength and conditioning coach while Barry Rubin was named senior strength and conditioning coach. In the NFLPA survey the Bills were ranked 23rd when it came to strength coaches.
