Steelers Expected to Draft QB, Even if Aaron Rodgers Signs: Report

The Aaron Rodgers saga continues to dominate what little is left of the 2025 NFL offseason. The initial wave of free agency is over, and what remains are the pieces that could help teams but aren't necessarily that enticing.

Of those pieces, Rodgers seems to be the top one at the most important position in football. At 41 years old, Rodgers is a solid short-term option but not a serious long-term one.

Reportedly, the Pittsburgh Steelers are the most likely team to sign Rodgers in free agency, with the Minnesota Vikings pulling out of the discussion and the New York Giants not being in serious consideration for the veteran QB.

However, according to ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler, the Steelers could still draft a quarterback using significant draft capital to do so, whether they sign Rodgers or not.

That makes a lot of sense, as Rodgers is a good option for the team to win now while drafting a QB could shore up the team's future at the position, especially with them sitting behind Rodgers to learn the position.

Top candidates for the Steelers in the 2025 NFL draft seem to be Jaxon Dart, Jalen Milroe, and Kyle McCord.

Fowler also said the team could address the position in 2026, but it is unclear who they would take as of now.

While it wouldn't be for as many years, the Steelers could pull a similar move as the Packers when they drafted now-star quarterback Jordan Love in the first round while they still had Rodgers as the clear starter.

Love sat behind and learned from Rodgers for three seasons before becoming the full-time starter after Rodgers went to the New York Jets.

If a rookie quarterback got to sit for a few seasons and learn from the veteran until he retires, that could be greatly beneficial both for the young QB and the future of the franchise.

Until Rodgers actually signs with the Steelers, all of this talk is just reports and speculation.

The Steelers seem like a prime candidate to draft a quarterback anyway, but signing Rodgers would change the long-term strategy.

There are other veterans out there who could fill a similar role as Rodgers could, but unless the team mends its relationship with Russell Wilson, none have the pedigree that Rodgers has.

As of now, everyone is waiting to see what Rodgers does, and how his signing will impact the quarterback market in the near future.
