A Perfect Fit: Medical Students Discover Their Residency Destinations at a Nationwide Ceremony

In a time-honored tradition and rite of passage, the Class of ’62 Auditorium at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry buzzed with excitement and emotion on Friday, March 21. At noon, medical students in Rochester and nationwide opened envelopes, revealing the institutions where they would train as residents.

“Match Day is a significant milestone in every physician’s journey—it marks the beginning of a new chapter of their career and is the culmination of years of hard work,” said [David R. Lambert, MD](https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/people/112358682-david-r-lambert), Senior Associate Dean for Medical School Education. “We are honored to see many graduates choosing to continue their training with us and equally proud of those venturing nationwide with the excellence of a University of Rochester education.”

The road to Match Day begins during the fourth year of medical school when students apply and interview for residency programs. After interviews, both students and institutions submit ranked lists of their preferences. The National Residency Match Program then matches candidates to programs based on these choices. Early match participants in specialties like urology and ophthalmology have already received notifications.

“Our medical students’ journey at the University of Rochester is enriched not only by the rigorous academic curriculum but also by involvement in research, impactful volunteer and community service, varied elective pathways, and transformative international experiences,” said [David Linehan, MD](https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/people/112360171-david-c-linehan), CEO of URMC and dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry. “These experiences have honed their critical thinking, empathy, and adaptability, preparing them to meet the challenges of modern medicine with a compassionate and innovative spirit.”

Of the Class of 2025 who will be pursuing residency training, 26 students will stay at the University of Rochester Medical Center for their residency training or are returning after an internship elsewhere. Most are staying in New York State (38), followed by Massachusetts (10), California (7), Ohio (6) and Pennsylvania (5). The remainder will be in 16 other states for a total of 21 different states. University of Rochester students pursuing residency training were placed in 29 different specialties, with the largest concentrations in internal medicine, with equal numbers in anesthesiology, diagnostic radiology, and general surgery, followed by family medicine, psychiatry, and emergency medicine.

The 182 new residents who matched with the University of Rochester Medical Center will begin their training in Rochester this summer.
