Arsenal have joined Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the pursuit of Lille’s stand-out player, according to French outlet Le10 Sport.
The Gunners have had a mixed Premier League campaign and have averaged less than two goals per game after 29 matches.
Manager Mikel Arteta will undoubtedly demand a marquee striker for next season, and Le10 Sport claim that the club are interested in signing Lille’s Jonathan David.
The Gunners have joined United and Spurs in the race for the 25-year-old. The Premier League trio are reportedly in ‘active and concrete talks’ with David’s agents.
David would be a good rotation striker at Arsenal
The Canadian star has been one of Ligue 1’s best strikers over the past few seasons.
Lille have priced him out of a transfer to the Premier League in the past, but he is now on the radar of several clubs with his contract expiring this summer.
The £38 million-rated star has decided to leave on a free transfer. He has his sights on moving to the English top-flight.
Arsenal have thrown their name into the hat alongside United and Spurs. They could have the edge over their league rivals with Champions League football next term.
United or Spurs must win the Europa League to qualify for the competition, considering they are languishing 13th and 14th in the league standings.
David would be a quality acquisition for the Gunners. He has accumulated 23 goals and 10 assists this campaign. 13 of those contributions have been in the Champions League.
The former Gent man has proved his credentials at the highest level. In our opinion, Arsenal may see him as a rotation striker in the squad rather than as a regular starter.
The club may recruit either Alexander Isak or Benjamin Sesko, with David competing with one of them. The Canadian could be restricted to cameos and occasional starts.
It remains to be seen whether David would be content with such a role at Arsenal.
