Former Newcastle United and Liverpool player says Magpies should shelve Carabao Cup celebrations

· March 21 2025, 19:30

**Newcastle United put an end to 56 years of trophyless misery on Sunday by lifting the League Cup. Their first domestic silverware in 70 years.**

For a club of Newcastle's stature, to go that long without winning a trophy and for it to finally end is nothing short of monumental, yet there are those who refuse to let us have our moment.

Simon Jordan, despite his insistence that he's happy for Newcastle, has aimed several digs at the Magpies' celebrations and, more specifically, the fans of rival clubs sending their heartfelt congratulations.

Paul Scholes tried to belittle the achievement by saying it's the cup that big teams try to get knocked out of.

John Barnes aims a not-so-subtle dig at Newcastle when discussing Liverpool

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now former Newcastle midfielder John Barnes has chirped up trying to pour cold water on Newcastle's celebrations. He was asked whether the international break has come at a good time for Liverpool to recover from defeat and took a swipe at Newcastle's upcoming celebrations in the process of answering (via [The Express](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/2030590/Newcastle-news-Carabao-Cup-parade-John-Barnes)).

> “All the top players immediately focus on what’s coming up next. Top players don’t celebrate mid-season, if you do that, it’s when you’re on the open top bus in May or June. You have to focus on what's next.

>

> “All they have to focus on is the league. They're not in the FA Cup, they're out of the Champions League. They wouldn’t have prioritised the domestic cups over the league. Now it’s doubly important for them to focus on the league. It’s doubly important because now this is all they have to play for.”

We celebrate when we want, we're Newcastle United, we celebrate when we want!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Newcastle just brought an end to a multi-generational trophy drought. We'll celebrate when we want to, thanks John!

We aren't the ones who schedule a cup final mid-season, but why should we have to sit on that accomplishment for another two months before we're allowed to celebrate?

The final itself proved to be a distraction again, and we will now find out of celebrating before the season finishes proves to be a distraction too. Let us learn from our own mistakes and enjoy the ride we're on.
