Rangers and the San Francisco 49ers have a decision to make on Barry Ferguson in the coming weeks.
The former Gers captain was re-hired by the club to take over the reins on an interim basis until the end of the season.
Ferguson stepped in to replace Philippe Clement who was eventually sacked by the Glasgow outfit.
David Templeton delivers verdict on Barry Ferguson becoming the next Rangers manager
David Templeton was asked if he views Ferguson as the next permanent manager come the end of the season given his 60 per cent win rate since taking over.
He lauded his efforts in the game against Celtic and believed he was bold enough to make the decisions that Clement would not have.

In the same situation, with Celtic equalising, he is of the opinion that Gers would not have gone on to win the Old Firm Derby.
He told PLZ Soccer on 21 March at 46:49: “I think if he is going the way he is then they’ll have to (make Ferguson the permanent manager). Since he’s come in, they’ve looked a different side.
“Even that Celtic game, at two each, you’re thinking Celtic got the momentum, probably going to win. I think if it was under Clement, he probably doesn’t make the changes that Ferguson makes. He brings Igamane on.
“Making big decisions like that is only going to help him and it depends on how he does in the Europa League, but I think they’ve got a tough tie this one.”
San Francisco 49ers must consider alternatives as well as Barry Ferguson
If Rangers are considering Ferguson for the permanent managerial role, they must treat him equitably, ensuring he undergoes the same rigorous interview process as all other candidates, regardless of his iconic status as a former captain.
While Ferguson’s interim tenure showcases his passion and familiarity with the club, Gers’ ongoing football review and the San Francisco 49ers’ impending takeover demand a transparent, merit-based approach.
The club’s sporting ambitions, under new ownership, hinge on appointing a manager who can deliver long-term success in domestic and European competitions, not just sentiment.
If Ferguson applies, he should face the same scrutiny – assessing his tactical acumen, leadership style and ability to build a squad – alongside external candidates like potential names mentioned in football circles, such as Rafa Benitez or foreign talents.

However, if the 49ers, post-takeover, thoroughly evaluate all applicants and conclude Ferguson is the best fit, based on his interim results, vision, and alignment with Rangers’ goals, they should hire him without hesitation.
Fairness in the process ensures the club’s future stability, while merit drives success at Ibrox.
