Overheard at Michigan’s pro day: Bryce Underwood hype, Calvin Johnson

ANN ARBOR – Michigan’s football program held its annual pro day on Friday as several former Wolverines worked out in front of NFL scouts.

A handful of players, including projected first-round picks Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant, Will Johnson and Colston Loveland, spoke to media after the event.

Here are the highlights:

**Johnson reflecting on his Michigan career and missing seven games because of injuries in 2024**: “Overall, I feel like I had a pretty good career here. Accomplished a lot of my goals: win a national championship, beat Ohio State, win Big Ten championships. But, yeah, this season was tough. Another goal was to do all those things this year, too, and I wasn’t able to be out there with the team. I did everything I could to be with the team and still help out the team any way I could. But it was tough to not affect the game in a way I know I could and help the team get to that next level.”

**Loveland on five-star freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood:** “I went to a practice, and he’s a stud. He’s all about the hype, for sure. He’s that good.”

**Graham on weighing in at 296 pounds at the NFL combine after being listed at 320 pounds in 2024. He weighed 306 Friday.** “I feel like teams aren’t concerned about it. My weight fluctuates, but wherever I feel comfortable at is wherever I feel comfortable at. I wasn’t playing football when I weighed in at the combine, so it was a little different. But as I get closer (to the start of the season), I’ll be back to 310.”

**Grant on going through all the testing at pro day after withdrawing late from the combine because of a hamstring injury. He said he wasn’t told his times in the 40-yard dash or agility drills but did 27 reps on the bench press.** “It went better than I expected. I felt really good, so I decided to do everything. Body was feeling good, hammy was feeling good. Just taking care of my body and trying to compete.”

**Johnson on if he was a Lions fan growing up in Grosse Pointe:** “They weren’t too good growing up, so it was hard to be a fan. But I actually loved Calvin Johnson when I was younger.”

**Edge Josaiah Stewart on former Michigan teammate TJ Guy comparing him to a Tasmanian devil:** “I’ve heard it before, so I guess you can say it’s pretty accurate. But probably just the way I play nonstop. No matter what’s in front of me, I’m going right through it.”

**Offensive tackle Myles Hinton on his goal for the draft:** “I want to get drafted as high as possible. In my opinion, I’m one of, if not the best tackle in the draft. It might not be reflected in like the mock drafts, but in my opinion, I feel like when I play my best, I’m the best tackle out there. I hope it reflects in the draft, but I’m the most athletic tackle in my opinion.”

**Cornerback Aamir Hall on the future of the cornerback room at Michigan:** “I think we have a lot of talent in the defensive back room, period, specifically with the corners. We got a young guy, Jyaire, has a lot of experience from playing last year. Then we have Zeke Barry. He’s like a Swiss army knife. He could play anywhere in the secondary. We have a lot of young guys that haven’t got a chance to show what they can do yet on the field, but very talented and they’ll show very soon what they can do.”

**Stewart on what stood out about his meetings with the Lions**: “Just their defense. They run a pretty good defense similar to ours. They have a SAM position as well. I feel like I would fit really well in that defense.”

**Johnson on four Wolverines potentially being drafted in the first round, which would be a program record:** “It would be amazing. I mean, that’s what we came here for to do things like that. We had a special group when we came in, so it’s definitely been cool to see. I think we can do that. I think it would be smart for teams to do that too.”

**Graham on his mindset as a pass rusher:** “Whoever’s in the way, I’m gonna through them, whatever that may be, however that looks, I’m gonna get it done. But winning is the ultimate goal for me at the end of the day. So it’s like that mentality I bring every game, every practice.”
