Brian Gutekunst Was the Lone GM At Private Workout For Top WR Prospect

With the draft nearing, front offices are working towards finalizing draft boards.

Part of that process is attending workouts for targets on the board.

According to ESPN, Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst was the only general manager to attend a private workout for Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan.

McMillan is widely expected to be the top true wide receiver taken in April’s draft. Some believe he could sneak into the top 10 while otherwise foresee a slip.

ESPN’s Jordan Reid reported that McMillan held a private workout that many scouts attended this past Monday. However, there was only one general manager on hand.

Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan held a private workout for scouts Monday afternoon, participating in the 40-yard dash and running routes. The three evaluators I talked to were very complimentary of his performance. Times ranged in the 4.52-4.56 range for McMillan, which matches the speed scouts projected for him. Brian Gutekunst of the Packers was the lone NFL general manager in attendance, per sources.

Surely, this will have Packers fans giddy.

Green Bay has a need at wide receiver, and McMillan was a freak of nature during his time at Arizona.

It is worth reminding that the Packers haven’t taken a wide receiver in the first round since they selected Javon Walker in 2002.

It’s become such a story in recent years that Gutekunst has been asked on multiple occasions if it’s an organizational philosophy not to take a wideout in Round 1. Gutekunst has denied that as fact.

McMillan is listed at 6’5″, 210 lbs., and has a heck of a catch radius. In his final season with the Wildcats, McMillan piled up 84 receptions for 1,319 yards and eight touchdowns.

If Green Bay is looking for a potential No. 1 wideout and only has the draft left to lean on, McMillan could fit that description.

McMillan would unlikely fall to No. 23, where Green Bay is selecting.

If that’s the case and Gutekunst is interested, would the Packers trade up?

Time will tell.
