Liverpool have the chance to bolster their ranks when the summer transfer window opens for business
Liverpool are set to win the Premier League title this season under the guidance of Arne Slot, barring any major collapse. The Reds have been the most consistent team in the league in this campaign as they edge closer to luring the trophy back to Anfield.
Slot was picked as their replacement for Jurgen Klopp last summer after catching the eye at Feyenoord. The Dutchman has done a decent job overall in his first year in England, despite being knocked out of the Champions League and FA Cup and losing in the Carabao Cup final.
The Merseyside outfit can boost their squad with some new faces this summer ahead of next term. They could also let some players head out the exit door too when the new window opens too if needed.
Liverpool target Marc Guehi at Crystal Palace
According to a report by Football Insider, Liverpool could land Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi for a cut-price fee of around £50million later this year. The Eagles are said to have lowered their valuation of the player from last year’s, with Chelsea also mentioned as a potential suitor.
Guehi, 24, is under contract at Selhurst Park until June 2026 meaning he is due to become a free agent next year as things stand. He appears no closer to putting pen-to-paper on an extension with his current club anytime soon.
Therefore, they may have to sell him when this season ends to ensure that they get some cash for him and that he doesn’t leave for nothing. The England international, who has made 22 caps for the Three Lions, will be hoping to get more minutes for his country under new boss Thomas Tuchel.
Guehi has been a key player for Crystal Palace since joining them back in 2021 and they face a real battle to keep hold of him amid links to the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea. He has made 145 appearances in all competitions and has scored eight goals from the back.
He rose up through the academy ranks at Stamford Bridge and was a regular for the Blues at various different youth levels as a youngster before two separate loan spells away in the Football League at Swansea City to get some experience under his belt. The Ivory Coast-born man then went on to play two matches for Chelsea’s first-team before they sold him.
Why Marc Guehi would suit Liverpool
Liverpool stalwart Virgil van Dijk isn’t getting any younger and they need to start thinking about long-term replacement. In addition, the Dutchman’s situation is up in the air as well and it remains to be seen how much longer he will be sticking around.
Guehi would be ideal for the Reds as he is still young, has potential to get better down the line and already knows the league. He would be able to settle in relatively comfortably and it probably wouldn’t take him too long to find his feet.
If Slot’s side managed to land him ahead of Chelsea, it would be a statement of intent to the rest of the division as they aim to win more titles over the coming years. He could strengthen their options at the back and inject more competition and depth in their squad which is needed as they juggle domestic duties with European football.
