Kenneth Sims, the New England Patriots first overall pick in the 1982 NFL Draft, passed away Friday, according to Chip Brown of 24/7Sports.com.
Sims, a former standout at the University of Texas, and a member of the Patriots first AFC Championship team, was 65.
The Patriots selected him first in a draft that also featured Jim McMahon, Marcus Allen, Mike Munchak and Morten Anderson.
The defensive end spent his entire pro career with the Patriots. He played in 74 career games over the course of eight seasons. He registered 17 sacks in those years in Foxborough.
Sims, who wore No. 77, had the misfortune of breaking his leg late in the season in 1985, the year the Patriots made it to Super Bowl XX, losing to the Chicago Bears.
Sims' career was injury-plagued. He only played one complete season, that coming in 1984. In 1987, he underwent back surgery, and in 1988, a ruptured Achilles tendon forced him to miss the entire season.
The former Longhorn is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
