Published on Mar. 22, 2025, 12:36 AM

There is a chance of seeing the northern lights dance across the night sky tonight, Canada!

Night owls with clear skies should head outside and gaze up for a chance to see dazzling auroras after sunset into the early overnight.

The best chances to see the auroras in the sky are Friday night into the early hours on Saturday morning. The auroras are forecast to diminish around 2 a.m. EST.

Tonight's northern lights chances have been sparked by a moderate Geometric storm (G2) interacting with Earth's magnetic field.

Experts rate the intensity of geomagnetic activity on the Kp Index, which ranges from Kp 0 on the low end to Kp 9 on the high end. Values around Kp 7 are sufficient for nationwide aurora visibility.

Saturday morning’s geomagnetic activity could reach Kp 6, according to the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). This could make the northern lights visible all the way into New York and Washington state.

As always, successful aurora viewing ultimately comes down to the weather.
