Vikings moving forward with Ryan Tannehill

The Minnesota Vikings lost their starter from last year, Sam Darnold after Darnold signed with the Seattle Seahawks in free agency. Darnold had a resurgent year in 2024 that made him one of the most coveted arms on the market this offseason, but the Vikings elected not to bring him back at the price tag he would command so soon after drafting J.J. McCarthy.

All signs have pointed toward McCarthy being the team’s starter next season, but according to one prominent league insider, a new wrinkle has been added to the situation.

“Sources: The#Vikings have had discussions with former#Titans QB Ryan Tannehill about a potential deal. Talks are ongoing and nothing is imminent as of right now, sources tell (NFL on FOX),” reported FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz on Friday.

Fans reacted to the news on social media.

“Both Tannehill and JJM are represented by Brian Ayrault of CAA. He’s likely pushing this behind the scenes,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“Hmm. Think he is good as a backup player but as a mentor he has made it clear that isnt him. And thats ok by but is that what the vikings want?” one fan wanted to know.

“The Vikings can sign him in May, if they want him for QB2. There’s no reason to lose 2026 4th or 5th round compensatory pick by signing him now,” someone else added.

It’ll be interesting to monitor the situation as we get deeper into the offseason.
