South Korea, Japan, China reaffirm combined ‘responsibility’ for peace on Korean Peninsula

**ISTANBUL**

South Korea, Japan and China reaffirmed that peace on the Korean Peninsula is a “shared interest and responsibility,” South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul said Saturday after trilateral talks in Tokyo, Seoul-based Yonhap News reported.

Cho met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, stressing the need to sustain cooperation amid economic and security uncertainties.

“I emphasized that North Korea must not be rewarded for its wrong behavior in the course of bringing an end to the war in Ukraine,” said Cho, urging full implementation of UN Security Council sanctions.

Wang highlighted the need for “enhanced communication, trust, and cooperation,” while Iwaya reaffirmed that “North Korea’s denuclearization is our shared goal.”

The ministers agreed to push for a leaders’ summit “at the earliest possible time.”

On North Korea, Iwaya expressed concerns about its nuclear and missile activities and military ties with Moscow. “North Korea’s denuclearization is our shared goal, and Japan is committed to fully implementing UNSC sanctions,” he said.

Following the talks, Cho held separate meetings with Iwaya and Wang.

The last three-way foreign ministers dialogue was held in South Korea in November 2023. A summit between the leaders of the three nations took place last May in Seoul.
