Dan Burn has gone from ending Newcastle United’s trophy drought to making his England debut.
It has been some week for the 32-year-old, who scored as Newcastle United beat Liverpool to win the 2025 Carabao Cup.
He opened the scoring in the first half, with Dan Burn’s goal being the first that Newcastle had scored at Wembley since 2000.
That was the ultimate high for Dan Burn, who went straight from winning silverware with the Magpies to representing England.
Burn played the full 90 minutes as England beat Albania 2-0, with Thomas Tuchel starting his reign as manager with a win.

It was a solid performance from the defender, while Burn almost scored on his England debut. Unfortunately, his headed effort in the first half struck the crossbar.
But the Newcastle United centre-back can be happy with his efforts, with the national media praising his display.
The Telegraph gave Burn a rating of 6/10, writing: “Huge presence for England, particularly at set-pieces. He hit the bar with one of the headers he won from a corner as England lined up in a “love train” to get him space. Good tussle with Broja.”

He also received a 6/10 from BBC Sport, who wrote: “A first England start caps a dream couple of weeks for the Newcastle defender. Overall he was solid and made a couple of key blocks. A couple of nervy moments and a slight misunderstanding with Pickford after blocking a shot in the first half, but dealt with the danger afterwards. A threat from set-pieces and hit the bar with a header.”
Burn was described as a ‘menace’ by the Daily Mail, who continued the trend of giving him a 6/10. They wrote: “Burn at the back stick at Wembley – where have we seen that before? No goals this time but the big lad was a menace when attacking corners.”
The Daily Express went one step further, giving Burn a score of 7/10 and writing: “Had little or no defending to do, but still looked calm and assured on debut. Came within a whisker of scoring, too.”
How Newcastle United’s other England players fared against Albania
Burn was one of three Newcastle United players in the England squad for the win over Albania. However, he was the only Toon player named in Tuchel’s starting XI.
Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento were both on the bench, with the former coming on in the second half to replace Marcus Rashford on the left of attack.
It was Gordon’s first appearance since being sent off during Newcastle’s FA Cup defeat to Brighton. This game also ended in disappointment, with Gordon receiving treatment for an injury at full-time before limping down the tunnel. That is a concern.
After Livramento’s incredible performance against Mo Salah in the Carabao Cup final, he was an unused substitute for England.
He will hope to feature in England’s next game, with the Three Lions set to face Latvia on Monday night in another World Cup qualifier at Wembley.
