Arsenal have been told to make Newcastle striker Alexander Isak their No. 1 transfer priority this summer following their struggles in front of goal. The Gunners are currently playing without a recognised striker, with Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus both ruled out for the rest of the season through injury.
Isak has been a revelation since moving to St James’ Park from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2022. The Sweden international has netted 58 goals in 100 appearances for the Magpies and popped up with a goal on Sunday as Newcastle stunned Liverpool 2-1 to win the Carabao Cup at Wembley.
We asked Express Sport readers to tell us who Arsenal should pursue as their priority target this summer.
A staggering 40 per cent of respondents named Isak as the man Arteta needs to focus his efforts on landing.
Meanwhile, 23 per cent of people who voted said Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins should be the No. 1 priority, with 13 per cent pointing towards Benjamin Sesko and another 13 per cent naming Viktor Gyokeres.
Arteta was asked about Arsenal’s lack of signings in the winter transfer window, with the Spaniard seeing a late bid for Watkins rejected.
And the Arsenal boss explained: “We had a clear intention, which is always there is a window open to explore the opportunities to improve our squad with players that can impact it.
“We haven’t achieved it so we are disappointed in that sense but as well we are very aware that we only want to bring certain kinds of players and we have to be very disciplined with that and I think we will.
“It’s not a gamble, it’s reality. I think we have to face the reality as well that we have. So we’re going to have to evolve there as well and have more and have more players from the academy and the ones that are here to be fitter longer.
“That’s a job that is permanent and it keeps evolving and we need to be on our toes. We’re going to have to be very flexible in the front line and now the ones that we have and are fit, make sure that they stay fit and they keep contributing.”
Isak, who is contracted to Newcastle until 2028, would command a hefty transfer fee if he were to leave St James’ Park this summer. But Magpies chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan could stamp out any talk of an exit after reportedly telling the club’s hierarchy to keep the player in the north east this summer.
