Newcastle United are confident about extending the player’s contract.
Newcastle United remain in talks with Fabian Schar over a new contract, with the defender expected to sign on the dotted line.
Schar - who turns 34 in December - is out of contract at the end of the campaign but there is little desire to lose him. He is widely regarded as one of the Magpies’ best bargains in the Premier League era, signing him from Deportivo La Coruna for just £3million in 2018.
The former Switzerland international has gone on to make 220 appearances, over half of which have come since Eddie Howe was appointed as head coach in November 2021. Last Sunday, he wrote himself into the history books by being part of the first Newcastle team to win a domestic trophy since 1969.

And it is hoped Schar has a role to play in future success, with talks between his representatives and sporting director Paul Mitchell ongoing.
Howe previously told NewcastleWorld: "With Fabian - just speaking from my behalf - he's been incredible for me. I have to say he has been absolutely sensational with some of the performances he's delivered. He's an integral part of what we're doing.
“His use of the ball is well known, his technical qualities and defensively he's been very strong for us. Yes, he's an important player and we'd love to keep him."
“I think you can see in recent games, he's been very good in different jobs that we've given him to do,” Howe added. “I think he is a player that you can use in different ways, very, very flexible in a sense that his game suits the modern way.
“I think his technical ability goes without saying, but he's very, very good off the ball. Again, he's quite comfortable jumping into midfield to help us with our press. He's quite comfortable obviously staying in his position as well, but it's that sort of tactical understanding.

“I think he's elite with his brain in terms of seeing the game. That's what you get with experienced players in that area of the pitch. It's him, Dan [Burn] and the other defenders we've had have done really well this year.”
