The attacks followed Israel’s two-week blockade on aid and its decision to cut electricity to the desalination plant supplying fresh water to Gaza.
PES President Stefan Löfven called for an end to the violence. “The suffering of the Palestinian people must end. Israel’s attacks on Tuesday mark another tragic turn in the conflict, further devastating Gaza, which is already in ruins,” he said.
Löfven emphasised the need for a two-state solution as the only viable path to peace and urged the European Union to take a stronger stance. He criticised the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council for failing to apply enough pressure on Netanyahu’s government, warning that continued inaction risks making the EU complicit in the conflict.
PES also condemned settlement expansion and annexation in the West Bank, calling it a violation of international law that reinforces systematic discrimination and violence against Palestinians. The party reaffirmed its support for a political solution based on international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.
The statement concluded with a call for the EU to play a decisive role in resolving the crisis. “At this crossroads, the EU must take a strong stance in line with its values,” PES said.
