“That Ain’t Going To Happen”–Nicky Butt Explains Why Man Utd Will Have To Wait Longer Than 3 Years For Next Title

Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt doe not believe INEOS’s ambition of winning the Premier League title in 2028 is realistic.

Speaking to The Mirror, Butt pointed out that the club’s rivals will make recovering lost ground difficult and there are also so many problems off the pitch that have to be solved for the Red Devils to become genuine contenders again:

“That ain’t going to happen. There’s a long way to go for that. What gets me is when people talk about getting to where they want to be, everyone expects other clubs to sit still, but they’re going to go forward as well.”

“Newcastle and Liverpool will get better, Manchester City will definitely get better, Chelsea are getting better, Arsenal are getting better every year. Then there’s lots of smaller clubs as well. So it’s going to be a long way off and the most important thing is starting off on the right foot and hopefully get this season put to bed, because it’s been a disaster.”

“Hopefully we get some plans in place for the stadium, get some new recruitment in and give Ruben Amorim the right tools to try and at least get a decent team on the pitch. I don’t think anyone’s got a given right to go and win the Premier League. It’s got to be a structure, it’s got to be a vision, it’s got to be a journey that everyone goes on together, including the supporters.”

Man Utd have a mountain to climb

At this moment in time, the prospect of winning the league in three years looks very remote. The club are currently sitting 13th in the league with there being a gigantic 33-point gap to league leaders Liverpool.

Due to PSR, the Red Devils will also have to sell before they buy this summer, making a rapid transformation of the playing squad difficult to achieve.

Other teams have shown what needs to be done

You don’t have to look far to see how a quick turnaround in fortunes can be performed. Liverpool were going nowhere in 2015 and they were challenging for the title within four years under Jurgen Klopp.

It was a similar situation for Arsenal. Mikel Arteta was appointed in December 2019 and, by 2023, they were going head-to-head with Manchester City at the top of the table.

Of course, for that happen, everyone had to be singing from the same hymn sheet. All parts of the club have to be aligned towards the same goal. It remains to be seen if INEOS can pull it off.
