Dan Burn’s England dream has come true, but it was not a perfect night for the Newcastle United defender.
That must be an odd feeling for Dan Burn, as all he has known over the past week is perfection.
He scored against Liverpool as Newcastle United won the Carabao Cup last Sunday. The 32-year-old made history, with Burn scoring Newcastle’s first Wembley goal since 2000 and helping end the Magpies’ trophy drought.
His next bit of history was a Three Lions debut, with Thomas Tuchel naming him in his starting XI to face Albania. They won 2-0, with the national media praising Burn’s contribution.

Dan Burn thought he had scored on his England debut
Burn played well, but it could have been even better had he found the back of the net like he did for Newcastle last Sunday.
He had the chance to do just that, but his first half header hit the bar.
The Newcastle United centre-back has spoken to Sky Sports about his miss, admitting that he was ‘gutted’ about not making it two goals in two games.
“Gutted that I didn’t score again,” he said.

“But I am getting a bit greedy as I’ve had a pretty good week so far.”
Burn was then asked if he thought his header was going in.
“Yes, I did,” he said.
“Unfortunately it didn’t go in. When I score, I tend to go on a little run. I feel like every time there’s a corner coming in I’m going to get to it and at least hit the target. Hopefully I will get one soon.”
‘Greedy’ Dan Burn will hope for a Wembley hat-trick
Burn knew his cup final header was going in, and he had a similar feeling on Friday night against Albania. Sadly, his instinct was wrong on this occasion.
Despite not scoring, it was another special night for the man from Blyth.
But he does not need to wake up from this dream just yet. His next appearance could come on Monday night, with England facing Latvia in their second 2026 World Cup qualifier.
That game is also at Wembley, which would give Burn the chance to pick up a hat-trick of Wembley wins in just nine days.
However, it remains to be seen if he will get his second England cap on Monday.
Following the win over Albania, Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel did hint that he would rotate his side against Latvia.
“I think we had some heavy legs, I felt us even a little bit tired, so we will take the opportunity, of course, to check who’s available,” Tuchel said.
“We have some good players on the bench who came on today or did not even play. So we have all options.”
