While little will dampen the mood at Newcastle United right now, an injury to a key player would at least threaten to do so.
The celebrations from Newcastle United’s stunning Carabao Cup victory will continue with supporters next week of course, while the Wembley memories will no doubt last a lifetime.
Still, there’s plenty yet to play for this season. Though that may sound like a fairly joyless reading of the situation, Eddie Howe’s side still have the small matter of Champions League qualification to play for.
Currently sixth in the Premier League table and with the top five potentially admitted entry into next season’s elite European club competition, the race is on.
What Howe could do without is an injury to a key player. Anthony Gordon is suspended for the next Premier League assignment – the visit of Brentford in early April – but the sight of him limping off while playing for England with what Thomas Tuchel has confirmed is a hip injury is a major concern longer-term.

What Anthony Gordon was spotted doing after England injury in blow for Newcastle United
Gordon replaced Marcus Rashford on the left towards the closing stages of England’s 2-0 win over Albania in the first of their qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup on Friday night.
Sadly for both the player and Newcastle, however, the 24-year-old picked up a problem towards the closing stages of the game. Gordon appeared in some distress and received treatment before limping down the tunnel.
In his press conference, Tuchel would say: “He looks injured.

“First of all I thought it was his stomach but it’s his hip and it does not look good.”
As posted by The Daily Mail’s Lewis Steele on social media platform X, Gordon was captured leaving Wembley with a slight limp.
Harvey Barnes offered chance to make Newcastle United statement
Newcastle face an anxious wait to see the severity of Gordon’s injury. The next game he would be available for is the away trip to Leicester on Monday 7 April, which looks a favourable fixture for Newcastle anyway.
Indeed, back-up left-winger Harvey Barnes was excellent in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool.
It has been a stop-start season for Barnes but Newcastle are at least covered on the left wing. It’s hard to put a positive spin on Gordon’s injury but at least the former Leicester man has proven he can step-up.
Howe might just need him for the run-in…
