It was another dream night for Dan Burn, but Friday’s return to Wembley may turn out to be a nightmare for one of his Toon teammates.
Thomas Tuchel fielded his first England xi since taking over as manager with Newcastle representatives Burn, Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento to pick from.
6’7″ defender Burn was once again a standout performer at Wembley as he made his England debut in a 2-0 victory over Albania having scored for his boyhood club just five days prior.
Eddie Howe will have watched through his fingers as a separate Mag was forced to require medical treatment on Friday before limping off the turf in the capital.
Anthony Gordon replaced Marcus Rashford with a quarter of an hour to go, but went down twice and needed treatment after full-time on an injured hip.
Three Lions manager Tuchel revealed post-match that the prognosis did “not look good” for Gordon, who had to be helped down the tunnel after the game ended.
“He looks injured,” said Tuchel. “I thought it was his stomach but it’s his hip and it does not look good. It’s a bit worrying.”
Frustrating for sure as the new gaffer looks to find his best team in the early stages of his job. Lewis Hall also robbed of a surefire cap after an injury of his own and it’s likely Gordon now misses Monday’s game with Latvia before returning to Tyneside.
Gordon is currently two games into his three match ban for violent conduct and is currently set to return when we face Leicester on Monday, April 7.
This gives the winger, who will miss Brentford at home on April 2nd due to his suspension, two weeks to recover to be in contention for our trip to the Foxes in a fortnight.
Harvey Barnes would be the likely candidate to play against his former club. The 27-year-old joined from Leicester in 2023 but has seen limited minutes on the left-hand side of the front three in competition with Gordon.
