Robert Griffin Sends Firm Message About Giants’ Jameis Winston Move

The New York Giants have been looking for a legitimate franchise quarterback ever since Eli Manning retired in January 2020.

They tried to develop Daniel Jones into one, but he never blossomed, and they moved away from him this past season. Now they have been rumored to be in the mix for future Hall of Famers Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson, and the No. 3 pick in the upcoming NFL draft also gives them a possible opportunity to draft a starting QB.

On Friday, the Giants made an interesting move by signing veteran signal-caller Jameis Winston to a two-year contract. Winston likely isn't the answer, but he could at least serve as a bridge to their next starter at that position.

Robert Griffin III, who was once a potential-laden young quarterback, posted on X (formerly Twitter) that Winston gives New York tremendous flexibility because it can either draft a quarterback or simply go with Winston as its QB1 for the time being.

The Giants signing Jameis Winston to a 2 year deal for $8 Million gives them the FLEXIBILITY OF A GYMNAST if they draft Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders or no one at QB. Don't have to rush the young QB into action if he isn't ready and can roll with Jameis if the QB you want isn't there

Going with Winston as a starter would likely take frustrated Giants fans through a rollercoaster of emotions. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft after a stellar college career at Florida State University where he won the Heisman Trophy and led the Seminoles to the College Football Playoff National Championship during the 2013 season.

He led the NFL with 5,109 passing yards during the 2019 season, but that same year, he also had a league-high 30 interceptions. That seems to encapsulate the Winston experience in a nutshell.

If the Giants cannot somehow land Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders in April's draft, one has to wonder if their best bet is to ride it out with Winston and perhaps have a shot at Arch Manning, assuming Manning turns out to be as outstanding as expected.
