Colchester United under-21s concede late to lose to Ipswich Town

There was a lively start to the Professional Development League match with Colchester conceding a free-kick which Frankie Edwards headed clear.

Then the U's so nearly took the lead after Ronnie Harvey made a tremendous run down the right, unselfishly fed left to Ollie Godziemski who was denied by very good save by Ipswich goalkeeper, Charlie Binns.

John McGreal's Ipswich took the lead after 14 minutes with a superb goal.

Afi Adebayo got down the left at speed and from his cross, Tudor Medel brilliantly volleyed into the net.

A minute late Colchester’s trialist keeper was in trouble when he was nearly caught in possession but he survived the scare.

Godziemski’s shot on the turn was diverted into the side netting by Binns while Hakeem Sandah saw his effort blocked and when Godziemski netted the rebound he was judged offside.

Binns did well to deny Kai Martin’s shot on the turn, before a follow up attempt was blocked by a defender.

Two minutes before half-time, Ipswich’s Tommy Taylor did really well to stop the ball from going out of play and feed it back to a team-mate who drove their shot just wide.

Earlv in the second half, Colchester’s trialist keeper saved from Mendel who then headed the resulting corner over the bar.

This led to a lot of Ipswich pressure and corners but as Colchester responded, Godziemski's shot was blocked and Sandah’s resulting cross was taken away from Lennox Emery.

Ipswich almost doubled their lead when Matty Roberts’ superb crossfield pass found Mendel on the right and he came back inside and his shot hit the far post.

Colchester’s trialist goalkeeper made a fine save from a free-kick before the U’s equalised on 66 minutes.

A terrible back pass went to Godziemski and although his shot was saved, the ball ran out to Sandah whose shot went past a defender on the line and in.

Jamie Mauge twice went close for Ipswich before the visitors grabbed their winner, with 13 minutes remaining when Taylor saw his shot go in off the far post, from a very tight angle.

Substitute Alex Kokoshi’s effort was easily saved by Binns, as the clock ticked down.

In a frantic finish Kokoshi saw his shot blocked as were the follow ups but Ipswich held on to claim the win.
