West Ham United have fancied their chances of being the club to come out on top for Angel Gomes this summer as he prepares to leave Lille.
Although appearing to stand down from the race to sign the out-of-contract England international at the end of the season, the Hammers could still return with an offer as David Sullivan and Graham Potter weigh up different options.
For the move to reignite would hinge on the eagerness of Gomes’ representatives to get the deal done, sealing a Premier League return for the former Manchester United prospect who is far from short of suitors on a free transfer.

Gomes contract offer from West Ham revealed
Gomes and his entourage will have plenty of offers to work through this summer before the 24-year-old ultimately decides on his next move.
The Premier League could well be a better option for the midfielder to carve out a place in Thomas Tuchel’s final World Cup squad next year, having been snubbed for Tuchel’s current squad in favour of veteran Jordan Henderson.
MORE WEST HAM STORIES
Gomes had been included under Lee Carsley but now has a battle on his hands to return to the fold, and a move back to his home nation will certainly put him more front-and-centre in the shop window.
According to The Chronicle (21 March), the offer from West Ham which Gomes has so far turned down is a £100,000-a-week deal, which sources suggest come “nowhere near” alternative offers on the table.
Having suffered with a calf injury in late December, Gomes has found regular action harder to come by and has failed to get on the pitch in all but one of Lille’s last nine games.
Teammate Jonathan David is also very much on West Ham’s radar due to his similar status as a free agent in the summer, following a consistent goalscoring record in France which includes 23 this term so far in all competitions.

Potter likely to have to strengthen with fewer funds
West Ham would be daft not to be in for both Gomes and David, given their contractual situations in Ligue 1.
The Irons are highly likely to come nowhere near the level of spending of last summer – a net spend well in excess of £80million – which has largely been for nothing so far given the team’s lowly Premier League position of 16th, with Europe the initial target.
It is a key reason why both Tim Steidten and Julen Lopetegui are now history at the London Stadium, and why Sullivan will work with Potter and the current recruitment team for a more carefully navigated transfer strategy this time around.

Free agents will always be appealing but come with the danger that fellow suitors could blow you out of the water with salary offers, as looks to be the case with Gomes right now.
West Ham will certainly commit to a degree of squad surgery to improve this year, but it may not be as erratic in the numbers department as it had previously been.
