Nottingham Forest could sign Brazil international admired by transfer advisor Edu

Nottingham Forest tried to sign Brazil international Douglas Luiz from Juventus in the January transfer window according to Italian outlet Tuttosport.

Luiz left Aston Villa to join Juventus in the summer after a stellar season in the Premier League in which he scored nine goals from midfield to help the West Midlanders secure a Champions League place.

However, life has been difficult in Turin for Luiz who has only started three Serie A games for a Juventus side currently lying in fifth position.

According to Tuttosport, Forest tried to end Luiz’s Italian nightmare in January but Juventus weren’t willing to offload the Brazilian. The same report claims Forest could revisit a deal for Luiz in the summer and aren’t put off by Juventus’s €40million (£33m) asking price.

Tuttosport also referenced Edu’s admiration for Luiz. Edu left Arsenal last year and Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has confirmed his intention to work with the Brazilian sporting director.

"Edu was a very good player and also a very good sporting and technical director," the Greek told Sky Sports. "I have a lot of respect for him.

"The results we saw over the years at Arsenal were very good and he has done an excellent job at Arsenal.

"What I can say is that I would like to cooperate with him on a much bigger project, a global project. I'm optimistic that in case all this goes ahead, it will be another successful venture for both of us.

"I'm very optimistic about it, but we need to see how this will be developed and will be finalised, if and when time allows."

Edu tried to sign Luiz for Arsenal and saw three offers rejected by Villa in the 2022 summer transfer window. If Edu is indeed advising Marinakis, Forest’s interest in Luiz shouldn’t come as a surprise.
