'Expected to leave': Newcastle get fresh chance to sign player who rejected Eddie Howe twice -…

Newcastle United are not afraid to revisit former targets.

The Magpies waited to sign Sven Botman after initially missing out, then they did the same with Anthony Gordon. He is now one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever at £45million.

2025 could see Newcastle United reignite their interest in an old target again, as they aim to add depth in attack.

Newcastle have been linked with Hugo Ekitike once again, with the 22-year-old currently thriving in the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt. He has 28 goal contributions so far this season, while he also netted a hat-trick for France Under-21s in a 5-3 win over England on Friday night.

After rejecting Newcastle twice in 2022 and then struggling at PSG, Ekitike is finally showcasing his immense talent.

Hugo Ekitike transfer ‘expected’ this summer

That is why the Telegraph report that Newcastle are continuing to watch Ekitike, and he is a player who could be on the move when the summer transfer window opens.

That is according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who has provided an update on the French forward’s future on X.

Romano wrote: “Hugo Ekitike, expected to leave Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer after the excellent season he’s having. Premier League clubs already started calling for the French striker ahead of the summer transfer window.”

The new Hugo Ekitike problem Newcastle United could encounter

Given how well he is playing, Newcastle scouts have been proven right about Ekitike.

They knew he had this level of talent, which is why they tried so hard to sign him in 2022.

Back then, Ekitike turned down the opportunity to move to St James’ Park twice. In 2025, the Magpies could have a different problem.

With every goal he scores or assists, his price tag goes up. It has been reported by Christian Falk that Frankfurt want £67million for Ekitike.

That would break Newcastle’s transfer record, eclipsing the £63million that Alexander Isak cost.

In that respect, it is difficult to envision the Magpies making a fresh move for Ekitike – assuming that Isak remains at St James’ Park.

While Newcastle continue to monitor Ekitike’s progress, it feels likely that they will merely watch from afar unless they suddenly need an Isak replacement.

Ekitike might well be worth the £67million that Frankfurt want, but Newcastle can make better use of their summer transfer budget.
