James Garner faces an uncertain future at Everton with his contract set to expire at the end of next season.

Garner is one of several players coming toward the end of their deal at Goodison Park.

Several high-profile stars are out of contract at the end of the current season, with Abdoulaye Doucouré set to say goodbye to Everton despite his fine form since David Moyes’ arrival.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is another out of contract, with a potential move to Newcastle United on the cards for the striker.

Therefore, the Toffees have plenty of decisions to make in the coming months, and it seems as though they have already started to put plans in place in relation to Garner’s future.

Everton to hold contract talks with Garner

As reported by The Athletic (19 March), Everton could hold talks to extend Garner’s contract during the off-season.

It is reported that the Blues are keen to keep hold of the midfielder, who has been influential since Moyes’ return to Merseyside.

However, ex-Goodison scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Goodison News – has speculated that a sale could be on the cards, with a contract extension simply an assurance for the Toffees.

“I think the contract extension is so that Everton can sell Garner on,” King said.

“I’m not sure that this is a player who is going to be essential for Moyes next season. I’d imagine that Everton are covering their tracks to ensure that they can still generate some money from Garner.

“With all these players out of contract it seems as though the incoming CEO and the new owners have their work cut out for them this summer.”

Everton have a decision to make on Garner

Garner has been a regular for Everton since Moyes returned to the club. Therefore, the Scotsman might be keen to keep hold of the 24-year-old.

However, with the club moving into a new era, Moyes might also be keen to seek upgrades, and any money from the sale of Garner could be put toward a potential replacement.
