Arsenal’s midfielder and temporary centre-forward, Mikel Merino is making greater impact as a striker. Many think he is doing a better job than Kai Havertz.
Mikel Merino doing wonders in his new role
Mikel Merino is doing pretty well up top for Arsenal in a new role. He has been used as a forward for Arsenal in the recent weeks. The club went through attacking crisis. As attackers have been injured and also highlighted the squad’s attacking options.
They are without a proper attacker in their squad. It was hard to have a reliable flow of goals. But in recent weeks, the midfielder is finding his forward legs, as one can see.
The Spaniard has netted two times in three games across all competitions.
It was a bit of a surprise, a roll of the dice, but it has worked well. Merino has outscored Harry Kane, Lautaro Martinez, and Erling Haaland in that same span. Ian Wright claimed he was the striker Arsenal had been looking for.
The coaching staff saw something in him before he did, but waited until the moment was right to bring him into the role.
The Spaniard to the rescue
The 28-years-old is doing a good job, though let’s not forget that he isn’t a striker. The club’s failure to fix something they knew as a problem last summer has been shocking. But he is giving Arsenal some attacking life.
The north London side has missed more than its fair share of chances in the last month. However, Merino is at least doing everything he can to keep the Gunners afloat in the race for a top-four place.
The win over Chelsea was the biggest step forward in that regard. Now, with a nine point gap over Chelsea in fourth, the Spain international is doing pretty well for an emergency situation.
