‘Worrying’ - Newcastle United winger ruled out for two games as fresh injury blow dealt

The German took charge of his first game as England boss last night, coasting to a 2-0 win over Albania. Tuchel started Gordon - who missed the Carabao Cup final last week through suspension - on the bench.

Marcus Rashford was preferred on the left but made way for Gordon on 74 minutes. The Three Lions coasted during the latter stages to win their opening World Cup qualifier.

Latvia, Serbia and Andorra await to give England a routine path to next year’s finals across the pond. However, instead of applauding the Wembley crowd at the full-time whistle, Gordon headed straight down the tunnel in pain.

The 24-year-old - already set to miss Newcastle’s clash against Brentford as the last game of his three-match ban - clutched his torso awkwardly in discomfort. Speaking to reporters, Tuchel revealed Gordon has a “worrying” hip problem.

It is likely he will play no further part in England’s international camp as Newcastle tentatively hope for positive news. Tuchel said: “He looks injured. First of all, I thought it was his stomach, but it is his hip and it does not look good. It's a bit worrying, yeah.”

Former Chelsea boss Tuchel publicly called out his wide players, Rashford and Phil Foden, for failing to impact the game. Lee Carsley preferred Gordon during his reign as interim manager but Tuchel stuck with England’s long-serving duo.

“Both of our wingers that started were not as impactful as they can be or as they are in club football,” he added. “At the moment, I'm not so sure why we struggled to bring the ball quicker to them.

"They trained very well, they were decisive in training which is why they deserved it. They were very good in the last weeks in their clubs. We will keep encouraging them and give them a structure so they can show their potential."

Anthony Gordon endures frustrating week despite ‘proud’ Newcastle United moment

Watching his teammates star at Wembley last week must have hurt Gordon regardless of the win. He played a vital role in getting Newcastle to the final - scoring against Arsenal in both semi-final triumphs.

Gordon’s foolish red card cost him dearly but he was still seen celebrating with teammates at the full-time whistle. He posted on social media after the win: "I'm so proud of and so happy for every single person involved with this club. Winners, first of many.”

One would imagine his lack of match fitness is why Tuchel started him on the bench yesterday. While there is no timeline on his injury, any lengthy spell on the sidelines is unlikely to be welcomed by Eddie Howe.
