Junior Firpo has excelled for Leeds United this season but finds himself out of contract this summer.

Leeds will remain fixated on achieving a return to the Premier League for now, though they will need to have one eye on decisions to be made ahead of the summer.

One of those decisions concerns Firpo, who is set to depart Elland Road on a free transfer this summer unless the Whites opt to extend his contract.

Firpo concern emerges ahead of Leeds contract decision

Firpo has been excellent throughout the season for Leeds, though it appears as though this will be his last one at Elland Road before seeking greener pastures in the summer.

Many have questioned whether letting him go would be the right decision, but Paul Robinson – when speaking to MOT Leeds News – believes that his past performances in the Premier League would justify his exit.

When asked if Leeds were making a mistake by letting him go, he said: “No. Last time he played in the Championship he was good as well. And then he got found out in the Premier League. I think he got exposed.

“And I think there were players in that Leeds side that were good in the Championship. Brenden Aaronson is another one that, you know, didn’t handle the pace of the Premiership.

Firpo has contributed plenty to Leeds this season

“Firpo in particular, I think he’s had a really good season this season, under a lot of pressure. I think he’s under a lot of criticism. But that was for the way that he played in the Premier League and he got found out in the Premier League. Football fans and pundits and ex-players, sometimes you have short memories.

“Certain players find their level. And this may be his level. I wait to be proved wrong. But if he does depart, it wouldn’t be a case of how are we going to replace him. It’s a case of, yeah, that’s a position we need to look at and go and buy another quality left-back. Because I think he struggled last time in the Premier League.”

Leeds have a huge summer ahead

If promotion is achieved, Leeds will have a lot of work to do in the summer to ensure they have a chance of survival.

As showcased through the last few seasons, the gulf in quality between the two divisions is growing, and despite the quality on show at Elland Road this season, some serious investment and recruitment will be needed.
