Our look through the camera lens at Chelsea's 120-year history continues, as two generations of youthful teams made the Blues Britain's most exciting club.
Chelsea started our sixth decade as champions of England, but unfortunately we were unable to continue that success. Instead an aging squad and the changing face of football in the late Fifties saw manager Ted Drake rebuilding with a young team, which would become known as ‘Drake’s Ducklings’.
Prime among them was Jimmy Greaves, in many people’s eyes still one of the greatest talents ever produced by Chelsea or English football, but even with his 132 goals in 167 games for the Blues, we found ourselves fighting at the wrong end of the table.
That culminated in Drake being replaced by the larger-than-life Tommy Docherty and relegation to the Second Division. However, that gave our new manager the chance to introduce a fresh wave of teenage talent - themselves nicknamed ‘Doc’s Diamonds’ - who would go on to form the basis of the most successful team Chelsea had yet assembled,
Following on from our first two FA Youth Cup triumphs, we would return to the top flight and quickly launch an assault on an unprecedented Treble for the Blues, even if we only ended up with the one trophy at the end of that period, the League Cup.
