CBS Sports writer gives 49ers failing grade for free agency actions

The 2025 free agency for the San Francisco 49ers has been interesting. If you are happy with their moves (or lack thereof), you may be in the minority.

CBS Sports’ Jordan Dajani wasn’t pleased either. He handed out his grades to every NFL team in free agency and gave the 49ers an “F.”

The 49ers have had the worst offseason, and the list of talent they’ve lost over the past few weeks is incredibly long. As of now, Luke Farrell is the prized signing of this class. General manager John Lynch says the 49ers have a plan and that “big things are coming our way.” I guess that means the Brock Purdy extension?

That John Lynch quote comes from a conversation the 49ers GM had with The Athletic’s Matt Barrows:

“We’ve got this thing called the draft, and we’ve got a lot of picks,” the 49ers general manager said during Stanford’s pro day, his first public comments since free agency began. “And I think the thing the fans should know is we have a plan. And we’re gonna execute that plan. And we’re excited about the opportunity.”

After saying 2024 would be a crucial draft after the abysmal 2023 NFL Draft, we’re right back in that position again, saying the 2025 NFL Draft may be the most important draft for the 49ers in the Shanahan era. John Lynch has a plan. The 49ers have a lot of holes.

No doubt 49ers’ free agency has been a disappointment. The big question will be whether they made the right move in one or two years despite their inactivity in 2025. That starts with the draft and not whiffing. If they can have another draft like 2024, they can fill in the remaining pieces with some free agents and hopefully not be in this position again for awhile.
