Quality Publication Still Hitting The Right Note
Wolves fans once more have much to interest them in the latest issue of the football nostalgia magazine Backpass.
This quality publication is now 92 issues and around 13 years old and we are thrilled to have been part of the editorial team since launch day.
David Instone provided a piece on Jim McCalliog for when Backpass first hit the shelves in 2012 and was flattered to be asked recently if another airing could be given to the feature he wrote for Wolves Heroes on former Manchester United physio Lawrie Brown more than three years ago.
The magazine considered the piece worthy of presenting to its nationwide audience across two pages, complete with photos and a brief update.
Lawrie, one of the injured parties in the controversy and fall-out from Tommy Docherty’s infamous 1977 affair with Mary Brown, learned his physio trade in Wolverhampton and at Molineux and went on to serve the England cricket team at home and abroad for more than six years.
A few pages earlier in the glossy magazine, David Harrison offers up another take on one of this season’s familiar themes by taking a well-informed look back at the celebrated Wolves v Honved fixture of 1954-55.
This has been a season for taking a backward glance at that epic prestige friendly and our readers will be well aware that a high-class sculpture was unveiled on the outside of the Billy Wright Stand over the weekend of Ipswich’s visit to Molineux in mid-December.
Stan Cullis – gave what Backpass referred to as an ‘inspired half-time talk’.
That was close to 70 years on from the 3-2 victory achieved under lights by Stan Cullis’s side – a match at which none other than Ron Atkinson had a support role. The retired former manager is quoted at length in Harrison’s piece.
Sadly, an obituary of former Wolves coach Norman Bodell also appears in Backpass’s latest offering, which has Denis Law on the front cover.
Issue 93, in May/June, is due to contain an extended feature on former Wolves forward Steve Kindon, who went on to have an outstanding post-playing career as an award-winning after dinner speaker.
