Players thinking they've cracked it, bad day at the office and Tom King progress - Cheltenham…

**Any complaints about the result?**

No, not really. The first 35 minutes killed us. It's as bad as I've seen us, we were awful. I am not going to try and make excuses. We looked flat and they looked like they wanted it more. It was a very, very bad 35 minutes. Second half, I'd say was pretty even, but we didn't create much at all. We do some silly things at times, we don't put balls into the box when we should, we check back on our weaker foot and try and put it in with that. It wasn't a good performance today, especially that first 35 minutes.

**You tried numerous formations in that opening 45 minutes as well**

Yes, well I had to try something. We are down to the bare bones, but that's no excuse. We've worked all week on starting on the front foot, pressing and getting in among them, so to start that way.... I felt it in the warm-up because it was a flat and it was almost like they thought 'MK have won two of their last 17, so all we have to do is turn up and win because we're at home' but it doesn't work like that and football has a very consistent habit of slapping you in the face when you think like that. There are one or two in there that need a long, hard look at themselves because I think one or two actually thought that.

**You moved Liam Kinsella to right-back very early by the look of things. Was that a very, very early change?**

Yes, we did it straight away. I will be honest, they've played 3-4-3 all season, but they started with 3-5-2 and it caught us a little bit by surprise. It was easiest to go to a four, to get the information on and go man for man. But we were so far off it in that first 35 minutes, we could have played with 12 and I think we'd have struggled. Look at the goal and we've conceded off a set play, but it's not that - they've had three passes, forget about the header he's actually scored with, nobody has moved. We have not squeezed up five yard, there is nobody talking and it's a really frustrating day. It's a shame because they have given their all, it's a good group but today they've let themselves down.

**Did you consider making changes in that first 35 minutes?**

Yes, I'll be honest I considered making changes after 15 to 20 minutes. We tried four different formations, but as I've said it's not formations that win you games, it's players. When you have eight or nine off it, in that first 35 minutes, you are going to struggle because we were way off it.

**Can you put your finger on why, because you have been fairly consistent haven't you****?**

They have. We huffed and puffed second half, but it's not enough. We didn't really create anything. We've lost 1-0 and we deserved to lose 1-0. Saying that, it should have been 3-1 at half-time because MK should have scored three and one of Matty Taylor or Jordan Thomas should have taken that chance. We should have gone in 3-1 down. Second half was pretty even, we huffed and puffed. We were poor. It was a bad day at the office.

**What was your key message at half-time?**

'It's a good job you are only 1-0 down'. It's just about getting them to have more energy and belief, but when you have a few who think they've cracked it, without doing the hard yards, that's the frustrating thing.

**That must be very frustrating as the manager, when you have players who think they've cracked it**

Yes. I am not individualising anybody, I am just speaking and that's what it smelled like today. We thought we just had to turn up, run a little bit and MK would give us the points, but no. I know a lot of their players and they have pride and they are talented footballers. If you stand off them, show them too much respect and don't win the battle with them, they'll hurt you. They should have hurt us more in that first 35.

**What was the thinking in putting Tom King on for his home EFL debut?**

Try something different. We are down to the bare bones and Tom, in one v one situations, he can open teams up. He didn't get enough of it. He won a couple of headers towards the end and it'll be good for him to get his home EFL debut and he might get a few more before the end of the season now. The frustrating thing today if we'd won we are only six points off because teams have lost. I think it was only Grimsby who have won, above us, in those positions. Crewe have drawn, Colchester have lost and Chesterfield have drawn. It's what could have been at the moment. If we'd turned up today, done everything right and lost the game, you'd hold your hand up and say you've been beaten by the better team, but we have beaten ourselves today.

**What's the situation with Val Adedokun?**

Stiff hamstring, when he went down. I can't risk anything else. Thankfully Tom Bradbury will be back next week, Ryan Haynes will be available because he will have had another week's training. Scot Bennett possibly too. He trained last week, but blocked a shot and felt a little bit of discomfort so we have to be careful with him and make sure he's all right and ready to go, but I am sure it'll settle down.

**A long trip to Tranmere Rovers next Friday and is the team talk already done for you?**

We are going to Tranmere, who don't give you anything. I know they are towards the bottom, but they fight and have passionate fans. If we turn up and don't fancy it, it could be another Bradford evening.

**But you will make sure that doesn't happen**

I will try my best. We have worked hard, the coaching staff, all week, myself, Ash (Vincent), Aaron (Downes), everybody involved, and the players have worked hard this week, so to turn that out was disappointing to say the least.

**Is this one of the rare occasions this season when you feel a little bit let down by the players?**

I do feel let down today. More importantly, they have let themselves down. I will take the blame, it's fine, but it's times like today you have to look in the mirror and ask what you contributed today and I will tell you the answer for most of them today, it wasn't very much.

**Every time you get almost within reach of the play-off places, you seem unable to capitalise**

Yes, and it's where we are. We've done a fantastic job stabilising. Our budget is 22nd. I can give you all the spiel, but that wasn't budgets today. Their budget is huge, but they won that on the way they approached the game, the way they started, the problems they created for us and we let them do it because we were passive. That is the disappointing thing. This is our patch and we have a very, very good home record. If teams are going to beat you, they should have to earn it. Look at Wimbledon, Fleetwood, I'd say Notts County played well against us here, but we gave them three goals. It's frustrating. We started really poorly today.

**The first time since Swindon at home you've started that badly and it's been a long time since you've had to say that about your team here isn't it?**

Yes, it is. It's so frustrating, but when we drop below with our workrate and how we work out of possession and transition into attack, when we come away from that we are a very average team and we looked a very average team today.

**Arkell Jude-Boyd not quite ready to start today?**

No, I will be honest, the reason I didn't put him on earlier is that even 45 was a gamble for Arks. It's frustrating because we had a few out, but it's down to other people to step up.

**How much has Tom King progressed since pre-season last summer?**

He is a lot better than he was in pre-season. I am trying to be positive and use this as a compliment, but I thought he was miles off it in pre-season, in terms of his physicality and how he came back. I think he was low on confidence for some reason, obviously I wasn't here. He has taken on advice and it's credit to him, he's scored a lot of goals, got his confidence back and he's trained a lot better with us.
