Report: Liverpool are considering cashing in on player that's been in contract talks since November

Liverpool’s future defensive plans remain in flux as contract negotiations with Ibrahima Konaté continue to stall, according to Football Insider.

With just over a year remaining on his current deal, the French centre-back’s uncertain situation has put top European clubs – including Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid – on high alert.

Konaté’s future in doubt

Negotiations for a new deal reportedly began last October, but nearly six months later, Liverpool and Konaté have made little progress toward an agreement.

With his contract expiring in 2026, the Reds face a difficult decision: extend his stay or sell him this summer to avoid losing him for free next year.

Sources suggest that Liverpool are considering cashing in on the 25-year-old if a strong offer arrives, particularly if van Dijk remains at Anfield.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown claims that Liverpool are reluctant to let both of their starting centre-backs leave in the same window.

However, if van Dijk commits to a new contract, Konaté could be allowed to depart.

Liverpool’s centre-back plans

There are also concerns within the club over whether Konaté is the ideal long-term partner for Van Dijk, with Football Insider reporting that Liverpool have already begun scouting alternatives.

Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen and Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi are reportedly at the top of their list as potential summer reinforcements.

With Arne Slot set to make key squad decisions ahead of his first season in charge, Liverpool’s defensive plans are coming into focus.

The club must now weigh the risk of losing a promising centre-back against the need to refresh their backline for the future.

If no contract breakthrough is made soon, Liverpool could be forced to listen to offers for Konaté in the upcoming transfer window.

Injuries are the only reason Liverpool should sell Konate

Football Insider’s claim that Liverpool are not certain Konate is the ideal long-term partner for van Dijk is confusing.

For me, the only issue Konate has with regards to being an elite defender is his record with injuries. He has missed a total of 45 games for club and country since moving to Anfield in 2021.

However, beyond his issues with injuries, Liverpool very much have a superb operator in Konate. I think he has more than proved to be a capable partner for van Dijk.
